Lilian with a Samburu woman

Now meet Lilian, a fifteen-year-old Samburu girl.  In 2015, Lilian’s uncles married her off after she completed eighth grade.  The husband, an older man with three additional wives, received a dowry of cows, goats and cash in exchange for her.  Afraid and without a voice to fight for her rights, Lillian suffered in silence until she ran away in 2017.  It was then that she found a home at St. Clare Centre for Girls.

But Lilian’s husband traced her to St. Clare.  He threatened her; on several occasions he attempted to take Lilian out of school   St. Clare’s administration was aware of Lilian’s situation and vowed to protect her.  However, this did not break the Samburu marriage bondage.
