SPECIAL SUMMER DAYS

The girls from St. Clare recently began their last holiday in early August.  Forms three and four along with class eight were required to remain at school in order to continue their academic preparation for the National examinations.  They felt this was good since it would allow them to be ready.

But during the holiday, there were some changes in their schedule.  St. Clare hosted several teachers who were training for early childhood development degrees.  The St. Clare girls began their holidays with mass each morning and from there they had lessons until 12:30.  After lunch, they would do games with the on duty teachers.

In addition, the girls have been active in St. Clare’s shamba (large garden).  They have planted some sukuma wiki (collard greens), which will add more nutrition to their diets.  Elizabeth, one of the girls noted, “I am very glad we will have plenty of food and Father will not have to spend more money.”  They have also planted sweet potatoes, which they refer to as “drought resistors.”  Since they have not received rains, the area around St. Clare is very dry, but sweet potatoes seem to do well.
