Mercy as a young adultMy name is Mercy and I am from Meru, Kenya. My parents separated when I was two and I was raised by my maternal grandmother until I was ten.

Life in the village was hard, especially for girls, who are mostly deprived of their basic needs. Some days I would be forced to skip school and accompany my grandmother on the farm. Being a young girl, I would have to help with chores like fetching water and firewood, cooking and washing clothes -whereas boys my age would either be playing or doing their homework.

Despite taking multiple labor jobs per day, it was hard for my mother to provide for my two siblings and myself. When my grandmother heard about St. Clare in 2006, she enrolled me at the school with the help of our church.
